FASTPITCH SOFTBALL EQUIPMENT
Fastpitch softball equipment today is on the cutting edge of technology. From distinctive uniforms to 100% composite bats. So, how did we get fastpitch softball equipment to this point? Well, this game all started in Chicago Illinois on September 16th, 1887 by George Hancock. It was intended as a winter version of baseball. Yale and Harvard alumni played in the game at the Farragut Boat Club. It was a high scoring game, 44 - 40. Needless to say they didn’t have women pitching in this game. The club soon set rules for the game, and the next year it was played outside. The rules were published in 1899.
So we established that the birthplace of this wonderful sport was in Chicago, but that was men. What about women? The first team was formed in 1895 in, you guessed it, Chicago. A high school team that could not find a coach for competitive play until 1899. Obviously fastpitch softball equipment hadn’t even been considered yet. |
Let’s fast forward a little to three major events which propelled women into this sport and made it what it is today. The first was the Chicago National Tournament in 1933. A competition in which both male and female champions were honored. The second was the International World Championships 1965 which catapulted the formation of the International Women’s Professional League in 1976. In 1980, just four years after the league was formed, it disbanded due to financial problems. Despite the adversity it has faced, this woman’s sport has grown steadily since 1980. In 1982 the NCAA held it’s first championship for this woman’s sport. The third major event happened when this great sport debuted at the Summer Olympics in 1996 . This milestone marked a turning point in the technology of the game with a biomechanical study of pitching during the summer games. Funded by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) manufacturers took notice and fastpitch softball equipment was well on it’s way.
| With this predominantly female sport growing like it was, due to the demand, manufacturers started producing fastpitch softball equipment. There are so many companies today which have lines of fastpitch softball equipment sporting different designs and technologies. And unlike earlier years, fastpitch softball equipment in today’s market is designed specifically for the female athlete. |
